Hear the wind sing ; and, Pinball, 1973 : two novels
Murakami, Haruki, 1949-2015
Books
Home from college on his summer break, the narrator of 'Hear the wind sing' spends his time drinking beer and smoking in J's Bar with his friend 'the Rat', listening to the radio, thinking about writing and the women he has slept with, and pursuing a girl with nine fingers. Three years later, in 'Pinball, 1973', he has moved to Tokyo to work as a translator and live with indistinguishable twin girls, but the Rat has remained behind, despite his efforts to leave both the town and his girlfriend. The narrator finds himself haunted by memories of his own doomed relationship, but also by his short-lived obsession with playing pinball in J's Bar. This sends him on a quest to find the exact model of pinball machine he had enjoyed playing years earlier; the three-flipper Spaceship.
