This novel is set in the streets of medieval Paris. Three men are enamoured with the beautiful gypsy Esmerelda: the handsome Captain Phoebus, the wicked Archdeacon Frollo and his adopstive son Quasimodo who is a hunchback and the bell-ringer of the Notre-Dame cathedral. When Esmerelda is wrongfully convicted of murder, Quasimodo rescues her from the gallows and brings her into the sanctuary of the church. But the fragile safety of this sanctcum soon begins to fracture leading to tragedy.
