Samuel Fuller directs this classic film noir thriller starring Richard Widmark as Skip McCoy, a solitary pickpocket who has just been released from prison. On the subway he steals a handbag belonging to Candy (Jean Peters), a woman who is unknowingly carrying US government files on underground communists. Both the FBI and Candy's ex-boyfriend Joey (Richard Kiley), who planted the package on her, are determined to retrieve the package and it isn't long before they track Skip down. Skip, however, plays both sides against each other but when he becomes romantically involved with Candy he must reassess his criminal ways.
