Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage stars in this drama by director/producer David Gordon Green. Joe Ransom (Cage) is an ex-con trying his hardest to stay out of trouble. While working as a labourer for a forestry company, Joe is approached by Gary (Tye Sheridan), a troubled kid looking for money and companionship. As Gary explains to Joe that he needs money to help his mother and sisters escape from their violent stepfather, Joe immediately feels the need to protect his new friend, even if it means going back to prison.
